Who Is Dr Joseph Pizzorno?

In the world of functional and natural medicine, there are figures who contribute and there are figures who build. Dr Joseph E. Pizzorno belongs to the second category. Over a career spanning more than fifty years, he has not merely practised and written about science-based natural medicine — he has created the institutions, the textbooks, the professional standards and the policy frameworks that made it credible, teachable and scalable on a global scale.

He coined the very term "science-based natural medicine." He co-founded Bastyr University — the first accredited multidisciplinary institution of natural medicine anywhere in the world. He co-authored the Textbook of Natural Medicine, which has sold over 100,000 copies across four languages and five editions, and remains the defining reference work in its field. He served as a founding board member of the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM), completed three terms as IFM Chair of the Board, and was awarded the Linus Pauling Award — IFM's highest honour. He has been appointed by two US Presidents to national health policy commissions. He has spoken in over thirty countries across five continents. And in July 2025, at the age when most professionals have long since retired, he returned to Bastyr University as Interim President to lead it through a critical period of renewal.

Dr Pizzorno is also an Honorary Scientific Board Member of FMC Ireland, reviewing and advising on our annual conference lecture content — a role that reflects the depth of his commitment to advancing practitioner education in functional medicine internationally.

In His Own Words

"The most pervasive and silently accepted crisis today is the ill health of our people. We must change our fundamental approach from a traditional disease-driven model to one that improves people's health."

Career: Five Decades of Building a Field

1975
Licensed Naturopathic Physician
Dr Pizzorno qualifies as a licensed naturopathic physician — beginning a clinical and academic career that would span five decades.
1978
Co-Founded Bastyr University

1985
Textbook of Natural Medicine — First Edition
Co-authored with Michael Murray ND, the Textbook of Natural Medicine established the scientific foundation for modern naturopathic and functional medicine. Now in its fifth edition (2020) with over 100,000 copies sold in four languages, it remains the most comprehensive clinical reference in the field — a 200-chapter work containing over 10,000 scientific citations.
1990s
IFM Founding Board Member
Became a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Institute for Functional Medicine — helping to establish and shape the organisation that has trained tens of thousands of practitioners globally in the functional medicine model. He subsequently completed three terms as IFM Chair of the Board.
2000
White House Commission on CAM Policy
Appointed by President Clinton to the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy — and subsequently by President George W. Bush to the Medicare Coverage Advisory Committee. One of very few natural medicine practitioners to advise Congress directly on healthcare policy at the federal level.
2001
Founded Salugenecists, Inc.
Founded Salugenecists, Inc. to develop scalable wellness and preventive health programmes for employer populations — recognising that employers fund over 65% of US healthcare spending and represent a critical lever for population health improvement.
2004
Linus Pauling Award — IFM
Received the Linus Pauling Award from the Institute for Functional Medicine — IFM's highest honour, recognising lifetime contribution to the advancement of functional medicine.
2016
The Toxin Solution
Published The Toxin Solution — a landmark work presenting the evidence for environmental toxin exposure as a primary driver of chronic disease. The book introduced the concept of body toxin load to a broad practitioner and consumer audience, and remains essential reading in functional and environmental medicine.
2025
Returns as Interim President, Bastyr University
In July 2025, Dr Pizzorno returned to Bastyr University as Interim President — the institution he co-founded nearly five decades earlier — to lead it through a period of renewal and growth, expanding its clinical presence in Seattle and San Diego and reigniting interest in naturopathic medicine globally.

The Published Works: Building the Evidence Base

One of Dr Pizzorno's most enduring contributions has been the sheer volume and quality of the published literature he has produced — giving practitioners and researchers the reference tools needed to practise and advance science-based natural medicine.

In addition to his books, Dr Pizzorno serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Integrative Medicine: A Clinician's Journal (IMCJ) — a PubMed-indexed peer-reviewed journal distributed to 25,000 practitioners per issue and the most widely read publication in its field. His editorial leadership has ensured that natural and functional medicine continues to contribute to the indexed scientific literature.

Current Work and Focus Areas

Interim President, Bastyr University (2025–)

Dr Pizzorno's return to Bastyr University in July 2025 as Interim President represents perhaps the most personal chapter of his career. The institution he co-founded and led for 22 years needed visionary leadership during a period of challenge and transition — and he answered the call. His stated mission is to restore Bastyr to "enduring wellness," expand its clinical presence and increase enrolment, while continuing to position it as the global standard-bearer for naturopathic and integrative medicine education.

Environmental Medicine and the Toxin Crisis

In recent years, Dr Pizzorno has become an increasingly prominent voice on what he describes as the silent health crisis of our time: the accumulation of environmental toxins — heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants, plasticisers and endocrine disruptors — in the human body, and their role in driving the chronic disease epidemic. His research and writing in this area argue that no clinical assessment of chronic disease is complete without considering the patient's environmental toxin exposure and detoxification capacity. He is currently working on projects in Flint, Michigan, addressing the health consequences of lead exposure in low-income minority communities.

Artificial Intelligence in Clinical Practice

Characteristically ahead of his time, Dr Pizzorno has been developing artificial intelligence tools designed to help clinicians and patients navigate the complexity of individual health needs — drawing on the vast body of literature in natural and functional medicine to generate personalised, evidence-based recommendations at scale. He has described this as making fifty years of accumulated clinical knowledge accessible to practitioners who would otherwise not have the time to synthesise it independently.

Health Medicine — Beyond Disease Treatment

Dr Pizzorno's most recent conceptual contribution is what he terms "Health Medicine" — a framework that goes beyond functional medicine's root-cause disease model to actively promote health and resilience as a clinical goal in their own right. He argues that medicine has become so focused on treating disease that it has neglected the active promotion of biological vitality — and that this shift in framing is essential for the next phase of healthcare evolution.

His Connection to FMC Ireland

Dr Pizzorno serves as an Honorary Scientific Board Member of FMC Ireland — the annual Functional Medicine Conference Ireland. In this role, he reviews and provides guidance on lecture content and speaker slides for the conference, ensuring that the clinical education delivered to Irish and international practitioners reflects the highest standards of evidence-based functional and natural medicine practice.

His involvement reflects both his international reach — he has lectured in over thirty countries across five continents — and his ongoing commitment to practitioner education as the most effective lever for improving patient outcomes at scale. For the FMC Ireland community, his participation represents a direct connection to the founding generation of functional medicine thinkers who built the field from the ground up.
